The short, honest answer: a room with a 10 ft ceiling, 15+ ft of depth, and 12+ ft of width fits a full-swing golf simulator for nearly everyone. You can go lower — 9 ft ceilings work for shorter golfers with a flatter swing, and a portable floor-camera monitor squeezes into about 12 ft of depth — but the ceiling is the dimension that most often kills a build before it starts. Measure it first.

The numbers, by dimension
Three dimensions decide whether a sim fits: ceiling height, room depth, and room width. Here are the cited minimums and recommended figures for each. Every number below is drawn from the sources at the bottom of the page — nothing here is a house estimate.

Radar units (SkyTrak reference figures aside) generally want the golfer 7–8 ft back from the screen and a 9 ft ceiling minimum; portable floor-camera units such as the Bushnell Launch Pro or Foresight GC3 sit 4–5 ft behind the ball with the same 9 ft ceiling floor. The ceiling is the dealbreaker
You can shorten a bay, angle a projector, or share the width between a right- and left-hander. You cannot raise a ceiling. That is why height is the first thing to measure and the number that most often ends a simulator plan — a standard 8 ft basement ceiling is below the 9 ft absolute minimum for a full driver swing, and no amount of clever layout fixes it.
The figure scales with the golfer. Shop Indoor Golf puts the minimum at 9 ft for players under 5’10″ with a flatter swing, 10 ft for 5’10″–6’2″, and 10.5 ft for players over 6’2″, with 11+ ft recommended for the tallest golfers. The guidance is blunt about it: “most golfers require 10 feet for unrestricted full swings with a driver.” If you are between heights or plan to share the bay, size for the taller swing.
If your ceiling comes up short, you are not out of options — you are out of the projected-screen option. A net-and-monitor setup lets a shorter player keep swinging shorter clubs, and a launch monitor still gives you every number that matters. The screen is what needs the height; the data does not.
Depth depends on your monitor: radar behind vs. camera beside
The single biggest swing in room depth is where your launch monitor sits. A radar unit reads the ball from behind you, so it needs the golfer standing 7–8 ft off the screen with the device further back still — that is why a radar-based projected build wants 15 ft minimum and 18–20 ft to be comfortable. A portable floor-camera unit sits beside the ball and reads it from a few feet away, so it works from 4–5 ft behind the ball. SkyTrak’s official minimum bay is just 12 ft deep.
That is the whole reason the calculator above asks for your monitor type. If your room is shallow — a 12–14 ft garage bay, say — a camera-based monitor may fit where a radar unit will not. The trade-off is usually price and the marked-ball requirement for spin, which we compare unit by unit on the launch monitors page.
Why there’s no Garmin R10 row here. The R10 is one of the most popular budget radar units, but we could not verify an official, published space requirement from Garmin for it as of this update. Rather than print a number we can’t cite, we’ve left it out. As a radar unit it follows the same behind-the-ball logic as the Rapsodo and FlightScope figures above — expect it to want similar depth — but we’ll add a row the moment Garmin publishes a citable figure.
