Senior swing speeds
The distance loss above is almost entirely accounted for by swing speed. A male golfer in his 50s averages 90 mph of driver clubhead speed; by his 60s that’s around 85 mph, and at 70-plus 79 mph. The published data is below.

Speed drops gradually — a few mph per decade rather than a cliff — and the rate varies widely by fitness, flexibility and how often you play. Many golfers in their 60s still carry 85 mph or better. The numbers above are averages across the full amateur population, including people who have slowed more dramatically; a fit, active 62-year-old often sits a few mph above the table’s 60-to-69 figure.
Shaft flex for senior swing speeds
Senior and A-flex shafts are designed for the swing speeds common in older golfers — not as a downgrade but as a proper fit. A shaft that is too stiff for your speed will launch lower, spin less, and cost you carry. At 79 mph (the average 70-plus male), a Senior flex is the right starting point for most. At 90 mph (typical 50s), Regular is often correct, with Senior available for slower tempos.

The one-club-more adjustment
Plenty of senior golfers already know their distances have drifted — they just haven’t updated their club selections to match. The most common version of this looks like: standing over a 155-yard approach with a 7 iron, the same club that used to cover 157 yards easily, while the ball now actually carries 141. That approach finishes short of the green. The fix is not a swing lesson — it’s pulling the 6 iron.
A rough rule-of-thumb from the data above: between the 20-to-29 column and the 60-to-69 column, 7-iron total distance drops by about 28 yards. That is roughly one full club of distance at typical amateur gaps. By the 70-plus column, the drop from the 20s is about 41 yards — closer to one and a half clubs for most sets. For a golfer who hasn’t recalibrated their yardages since their 40s, the practical effect is hitting at least one club short on most iron approaches.
Re-measuring your real carry numbers is the cleanest way to resolve this. The table on this page tells you what the average golfer in your age band carries; what you actually carry is a different question, and one that is worth answering directly.
Why carry numbers matter more as you get older
Younger golfers who under-club tend to get away with it — a strong strike leaks a few extra yards, the ball bounds forward on a firm fairway, or a near-miss still makes the front edge. Those escape hatches shrink with distance. A shorter carry means fronting more bunkers and water hazards that were previously not in play, and landing on firmer ground closer to greens that slope away, which reduces the room for error on the run-out.
The gap between what a senior golfer remembers hitting and what they currently carry often grows quietly over several years, without any single dramatic change to trigger a recalibration. That is exactly why the Arccos data above shows a steady per-decade drift rather than a sudden drop: it accumulates. Knowing the current real number — not the remembered one — is the single cheapest scoring improvement available to most senior golfers.
