Golf club length chart

How long is each golf club supposed to be? Below are standard lengths for every club in the bag — driver through putter, men’s and women’s, steel and graphite. The driver section uses actual figures from manufacturer spec pages rather than the older clubmaking convention; the iron section is verified against the Titleist T200 spec sheet. Read all of it as a reference point. Your clubs may differ by manufacturer, model, or custom build.
Modern stock driver lengths
The traditional clubmaking standard placed a graphite driver at 45 inches. Current production drivers ship longer — most major brands now build standard stock drivers between 45.25 and 45.75 inches. The numbers below are from manufacturer spec tables, fetched July 2026.

Stock driver shafts are almost universally graphite. The once-standard 45" (graphite) figure is now below current manufacturer baselines for most brands.

Men’s standard lengths — full set
Stock drivers are graphite only — no steel-shaft column applies. Iron lengths (4-iron through pitching wedge) are from the Titleist T200 spec sheet; fairway woods, hybrids, and wedges below pitching wedge use a traditional clubmaking reference. Graphite iron shafts typically run 0.5 inch longer than steel to maintain swing weight.

Women’s standard lengths
Women’s standard clubs run one inch shorter than the men’s equivalent across the set — the consistent industry convention. This is calibrated for a female golfer of average height and swing characteristics, not a universal rule. A taller woman playing men’s-length clubs is common; a shorter man playing women’s-length clubs is less so but not unheard of. Length fitting by wrist-to-floor measurement is always more useful than gender defaults.

How much brands actually vary
“Standard” is not a fixed industry specification — it is whatever a manufacturer defines for their standard build. The numbers below show men’s steel 5-iron and 7-iron across major brands. The 7-iron is notably consistent (37″ for most brands); the 5-iron shows a 0.75″ spread from shortest to longest. The Titleist row is verified against the fetched T200 spec table (5-iron 38″, 7-iron 37″); other rows are from a comparison reference.

Why length matters — and why longer usually isn’t better
A longer club puts the clubhead farther from your hands, which increases the arc of the swing and — if everything else stays constant — adds clubhead speed. More speed means more distance. That is the correct mechanical principle, and it is why PGA Tour players use 45-inch-plus drivers while USGA and R&A competition rules now cap drivers at 46 inches for professional events via Model Local Rule G-10.
The problem is that everything else does not stay constant. A longer club is harder to control. It changes your posture, your lie angle at impact, and your timing. Most amateur golfers hit the center of the face less consistently with a longer shaft — and off-center hits cost ball speed faster than shaft length gains it. A test at Practical Golf comparing a 45.75-inch driver against a 43.75-inch driver found less than 1.4 yards of distance difference, with a 28% improvement in accuracy at the shorter length — numbers consistent with club designer Tom Wishon’s findings from a 50-golfer study in which most players gained distance as shaft length shortened.
For irons, the same logic applies but the effect is more immediate because irons require more precision. A 5-iron that is half an inch long tends to put the toe down at address, which flattens the dynamic lie angle and produces pushes. Standard length is a reasonable starting point; fitting is how you find out whether standard is right for you.
Longer clubs and lie angle: length and lie are related. When a club is too long, the heel tends to sit up at address, which effectively flattens the dynamic lie angle and sends shots to the right (for right-handers). When a club is too short, the toe sits up, shots go left. That is why length and lie adjustments usually happen together in a fitting.
USGA rules on club length
Under the Rules of Golf, a club (other than a putter) must be at least 18 inches long and no more than 48 inches long. A Model Local Rule (G-10), adopted by the major professional tours from January 2022, reduces the maximum to 46 inches for drivers in professional and elite amateur events. How to measure a club’s length
The USGA method: set the club in playing position with the center of the sole touching the floor at the lie angle the club was built to. Place a 48-inch ruler along the back of the shaft, with the end of the ruler touching the floor at the heel. Read the measurement at the top edge of the grip cap — not at the very tip of any plug or end piece. That reading is the club’s length. A flat floor and a quality 48-inch ruler are all the equipment you need.

What a length chart can’t tell you
Club length determines how far you can carry the ball only in combination with swing speed, strike quality, and loft. Two players with identical 7-irons at 37 inches can have a 30-yard carry gap between them based solely on swing speed. Knowing that your 7-iron is standard length does not tell you how far it goes. That requires measuring.
